The Gouvernement du Québec gives substantial encouragement to its Secretariat for relations with English-speaking Quebecers

Québec City, April 10, 2018. – The Secretariat for relations with English-speaking Quebecers has been granted a budget of 25 million dollars over six years, by the government, to consolidate ties with English-speaking Quebecers and contribute through developmental measures to stimulating the vitality of communities.

According to Kathleen Weil, Minister responsible for Access to Information and the Reform of Democratic Institutions and Minister responsible for Relations with English-Speaking Quebecers, this contribution will allow the government to implement recommendations that were formulated during consultations with representatives of English-speaking communities.

Indeed, Ms. Weil conducted a series of on-site meetings and online discussions through videoconferencing, with experts and stakeholders who are active in all regions of Quebec. Hundreds of people engaged in talks with the Minister on issues of concern to their communities, which led to constructive discussions on ways to move forward. The amounts allocated to the Secretariat will make it possible to follow through, beginning this year, on the recommendations voiced, such as support for:

  • community vitality;
  • access to public services, particularly in the areas of health and social services;
  • networking and partnership between experts and stakeholders who are active in all regions of Quebec;
  • networking and partnership between public and non-for profit organizations that provide assistance;
  • employability, retention of young graduates, and support for French second language training, and
  • cultural creativity and conservation of cultural heritage.

This newly allocated budget provides the Secretariat with an additional tool to adapt and adjust government intervention so as to contribute to the vitality of English-speaking communities and to increase their ability to participate fully in Québec society.

Quote:

“This is certainly a historic moment. For the first time, the needs of English-speaking communities everywhere in Québec are the focus of an overall vision supported by substantial investments of 25 million dollars over six years, enabling us to deepen our knowledge of the challenges faced by the communities, and to develop a plan with specific actions to promote community vitality and increase the quality and accessibility of services. We need the energy and talent of the community to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities before us.”
